Daley proposes change in Denver boot eligibility

Chicago Mayor Richard Daley is proposing that motorists with just two delinquent parking or red-light tickets should be eligible for the Denver boot.

Chicago Mayor Richard Daley is proposing that motorists with just two delinquent parking or red-light tickets should be eligible for the Denver boot.

Daley has come up with the plan in an effort to raise cash to help close a budget gap that has been said to total $400 million.

Currently, vehicles that have three delinquent tickets are eligible for the boot.

Aldermen from congested North Side and impoverished South and West Side wards were not happy at hearing the proposal, introduced at Wednesday’s City Council meeting.

Alderman Helen Shiller says reducing the eligibility to be booted is punitive. She points out a motorist can receive two tickets just by overparking at one location on one day.

Revenue Director Bea Reyna-Hickey says the city can no longer afford to give a pass to drivers with two unpaid tickets. AP ______ Copyright 2008 Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
