CHICAGO (AP) – Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel is acknowledging that the city needs to take steps to restore public trust in the red-light camera program after an unexplained spike in the number of tickets.
Emanuel’s statements come after media reports about at least 9,000 questionable tickets at a dozen city intersections. The Chicago Sun-Times reports that the mayor has offered to review the violations and refund fines if any tickets were issued in error.
The spike in tickets is the latest blow for the program. Earlier this year, the city fired the original contractor embroiled in a bribery scandal and the spike in tickets prompted the chairman of the City Council’s transportation committee to call for the entire program to be shut down.
