State Rep Emanuel Chris Welch, Sends Legislative Report
ILLINOIS–Spring Break is over and the Illinois General Assembly returned to work on Tuesday, April 14, 2015. The state elected officials are scheduled to work weekly through May 31, 2015, and their primary objective is to come up with a state budget for FY16. Many have predicted that these next several weeks will be long and grueling and that the General Assembly may actually go into overtime session. Rep. Welch is committed to keep the public abreast very step of the process.
While they were off , Part 1…On Good Friday, April 3, 2015, Governor Bruce Rauner suspended $26 million in social services and public grants that many of the state’s most vulnerable residents rely on. In Welch’s opinion, cutting these grants is unacceptable and will leave many people, including those with autism and children in Teen REACH, with nowhere to go. The State Representative says, “It is our responsibility as a state to provide a safety net to children and residents in need, not to cut it from underneath them right before the start of a holiday weekend.” Welch is committed to working with his colleagues in the General Assembly and the Rauner administration to address our state’s fiscal challenges. He has made it a point to note that he will personally urge the Governor to restore the grants he has suspended .
While the state senate was away, after just one week after cutting $26 million in social services programs, Governor Rauner approved $100 million in corporate tax breaks. His administration approved tax breaks for companies such as eBay, CapitalOne, CDW, and SAC Wireless to name a few. In Rep Welch’s opinion, “This move is a slap in the face to all of the organizations that received millions of cuts on Good Friday, and it will certainly make for interesting budget negotiations these next few weeks.”
