Chicago’s own Rico “MJ” Hampton has grown into a social media sensation, but to supporters across the country, and increasingly around the world, he is recognized as one of the most sliding captivating Michael Jackson tribute artists of his time.

With more than 25 years dedicated to performing as Michael Jackson, Hampton has transformed childhood admiration into a full-scale career built on live performances, viral moments, and meaningful community impact.

Inspired by a Legend

Hampton’s journey began long before social media, rooted in a childhood filled with the sounds of the Jackson 5.

“We grew up listening to the Jackson 5,” he said. “Once Off the Wall came out, and then Thriller, everybody wanted to be Michael.”

Encouraged early on by his father, who noticed the resemblance, Hampton’s interest quickly evolved into dedication. What started as fandom became discipline, studying choreography, stage presence, and emotional depth that made Michael Jackson a global icon.

“I do my best to honor Mike in the most positive way,” Hampton said. “I’ve learned from him not just as a performer, but as a humanitarian, and I pour that into what I do.”

Over the years, that dedication has led to unforgettable moments, connecting with members of the Jackson family themselves.

“I’ve met some of the family members throughout the years,” he said. “I’ve done interviews with them. I’ve performed at Joe Jackson’s events, including his birthday parties, and worked with Marlon Jackson. They enjoy my show, and I always try to put my best foot forward.”

The Power of Performance

Hampton’s shows are defined by energy, precision, and connection.

Fans often approach him after shows with heartfelt reactions:

“You’re incredible.”

“You did such a great job.”

“Awesome performance.”

For Hampton, those moments matter most. “It makes me happy to see people smile,” he said. “To see the joy on their faces, that’s everything.”

Like Michael Jackson himself, Hampton prioritizes crowd engagement, locking eyes with fans, feeding off their energy, and creating an atmosphere that feels personal and unforgettable.

From Chicago to the World

In recent years, Hampton’s reach has expanded dramatically through social media, particularly TikTok, where his performances have gone viral.

“Once my videos started gaining traction, more people became interested in what I’ve been doing,” he said.

That visibility has led to increased bookings in cities like Los Angeles and Atlanta, as well as growing recognition far beyond Chicago.

“Sometimes I’ll walk into a place, and people run up to me like, ‘Rico, I love your videos,’” he said. “It almost makes me feel like a star.”

Messages now arrive from across the globe, London, Paris, and beyond, with fans requesting appearances for events and celebrations. What began as a local passion has evolved into an international platform.

Honoring the Legend While Staying Grounded

Despite his on-stage transformation, Hampton is intentional about maintaining his identity offstage.

“I live a calm life outside of performing,” he said. “I’m at home, running my business, making music, and taking care of my kids.”

But when it’s time to perform, everything shifts. “It’s like putting on my Superman cape,” he said. “Now it’s time to go save the world.”

Hampton is clear about the distinction; he honors Michael Jackson without losing himself in the role.

“I don’t walk around thinking I’m Michael,” he added with a laugh. “I just want to represent him the right way.”

Chicago Roots, Community Impact

Raised on Chicago’s West Side before later moving to the South Side, Hampton describes his upbringing as grounded and filled with meaningful experiences, including frequent trips to Michigan to visit family.

Those roots continue to shape his outlook and his commitment to giving back. He regularly participates in charitable events, including programs supporting children with autism and other community-focused initiatives.

“That kind of work makes them happy, and it makes me happy too,” he said. “I love seeing that joy.”

A Lasting Legacy

With renewed global interest in the upcoming Michael Jackson biopic, Michael, set to release this Friday, April 24th, in theaters, Hampton is excited for younger generations to experience the artist who shaped his life.

“I’ve heard great things about the film,” he said. “I’m just glad younger people get the chance to see who Michael was.”

Hampton is also set to perform at events connected to the film’s release, further bridging his tribute work with the ongoing celebration of Jackson’s legacy.

From the choreography to the connection with audiences, Hampton’s work reflects a deep respect for Michael Jackson’s artistry and humanity. And every time he steps on stage, glove shining, crowd roaring, that passion comes to life.
