The investigation was later closed, Wonsley said, as she continues advocating for a transparent investigation into her son’s death.
Crump, who represents the Wells family, called the complaint an attempt to intimidate Wonsley as she continues demanding answers about what happened to her 18-year-old son.
“Christine Wells Wonsley was robbed of her son one month ago, almost to the day,” Crump said in a statement. “She has spent every moment since asking one question: what happened to Nolan? Now, someone is going after her nursing license, anonymously, without the courage to put a name on it.”
Crump described the complaint as “a warning shot at a grieving mother” meant to “pressure and scare her into staying quiet.”
He also said Wonsley, a family nurse practitioner, has spent her career caring for patients in Mississippi without ever receiving a complaint before the Board of Nursing.
Wonsley later shared that the matter had been resolved.
“Thank you to all of those who have constantly kept us in your prayers,” she wrote on social media. “This definitely has added more hurt to an already devastating time because I love my job and I love my patients.”
She also expressed gratitude to Memorial Health System, where she works as a family nurse practitioner, saying the health system has supported her while she grieves the loss of her son and navigates intense public scrutiny.
In a statement to PEOPLE, the Mississippi Board of Nursing said it could neither confirm nor deny whether Wonsley had been under investigation because state law requires all investigations to remain confidential. The board added that it is legally required to investigate every complaint it receives.
The complaint comes as Wonsley and her husband, Elmore Wonsley, continue calling for answers in the death of their son.
Nolan Wells disappeared July 4 after traveling to Horn Island with a group of mostly white friends. His body was found on the island’s northwestern tip two days later.
No one has been charged in connection with Wells’ death.
The official state autopsy has been completed but remains under seal pending review by a Jackson County grand jury. An independent autopsy commissioned by the family concluded Wells’ cause and manner of death were undetermined pending further investigation. Dr. Roger A. Mitchell Jr., the forensic pathologist who conducted the examination, also said the available evidence was insufficient to rule out foul play.
Crump said the anonymous complaint would not deter the family’s pursuit of answers.
“Attacking a grieving mother’s career does not answer the question of what happened to Nolan,” he said. “It tells us the question matters and the answer is scaring somebody. We will keep asking questions and demanding the facts until Christine knows how her son died.”
