NBA Legends, Robert Horry, Felipe Lopez, Glen Rice and current NBA All Star, Domantas Sabonis joined Kaiser Permanente at the Emmett Till Fine and Performing Arts School for a series of health and wellness activities and to donate a refurbished total health space at the south side elementary school. Students spent time with NBA Stars while enjoying on court clinics, healthy snacks, STEM, and mediation activities encouraging better health and wellness. NBA All Star Domantas Sabonis also shared ideas to help students live better with tips on eating healthy, staying active and getting enough rest every day.
Dr. Terea Peoples, Principal at Emmett Teal stated, “Educating the child includes their social, emotional, mental health, and wellness. These are all essential in child development. These newly built spaces at the school will help students create meditation practices and help with healthy eating. These spaces provide balance in the life of a child.”
Thanks to the partnership with Kaiser Permanente and the NBA, Emmett Till students received a new gymnasium, Peace and Mindfulness Room, and a Parent Resource Room. “Since Kaiser-Permanente is all about holistic wellness, we worked together to create these holistic spaces. This space will continue to support the students’ mindfulness practices and serve as a resource for the parents. We think this is an extension of embracing the community between our services and everything happening here at Emmett Till,” Dorri McWhorter, Chief Executive Officer of YWCA Chicago, explained. The YWCA hopes that these new spaces will continue to amplify the work that they are already doing in this community, supporting after school STEM programming, providing fresh produce and nutrition classes from their urban garden and providing sexual violence support services, family support services, and economic empowerment services through the YWCA network.
