From First Independence Bank in Detroit to First Independence Bank in Chicago: A 30-Year Legacy of Financial Empowerment

As Money Matters for Youth celebrates its 30th Anniversary, the
organization is proud to announce its Juneteenth “Legacy in Motion” educational experience, taking Detroit youth and families to Chicago for the historic Grand Opening of the Obama Presidential Center and a special visit to First Independence Bank’s Chicago location.

Thirty years ago, one of the very first field trips for Money Matters for Youth participants was to First Independence Bank in Detroit, where young people were introduced to the power of banking, saving, investing, and building wealth in their own communities. Today, as the organization marks three decades of impact, youth will continue that journey by visiting First Independence Bank in Chicago — a powerful reminder that dreams, opportunities, and legacies can grow beyond city limits.

The Juneteenth experience will provide youth with an opportunity to witness history in the making at the Obama Presidential Center, while exploring the importance of leadership, economic empowerment, community development, and civic engagement.

“This trip represents much more than a bus ride to Chicago,” said Gail Perry-Mason, Founder and Chief Visionary Officer of Money Matters for Youth. “It is a legacy journey. Thirty years ago, our youth learned about financial independence at First Independence Bank in Detroit. Today, they are expanding their vision and seeing how institutions, communities, and leaders can create lasting change across generations.”

Participants will engage in discussions on:

Financial literacy and wealth building

Leadership and public service

The history and significance of Juneteenth

Legacy planning and generational impact

Economic development and community investment

The event is part of Money Matters for Youth’s year-long “Legacy in Motion” celebration, honoring 30 years of empowering young people to Save, Spend Wisely, and Share.

Since 1996, Money Matters for Youth has impacted more than 8,500 youth and families through financial literacy, entrepreneurship, leadership development, and community engagement programs.

As the organization reflects on its beginnings and looks toward the future, the Juneteenth Legacy in Motion Tour serves as a powerful example of how investing in young people creates a return that benefits generations.
