Father’s Day 2026 Edition

As June draws to a close, we reflect on a month dedicated to honoring leadership, service, and the profound impact of men who have shaped our families, communities, and institutions. While Father’s Day has passed, its message remains relevant: the influence of fathers, father figures, mentors, and community leaders extends far beyond a single day of recognition.

This spirit of leadership and legacy is at the heart of the Chicago Defender Men of Excellence, a longstanding tradition that celebrates distinguished men who lead with purpose, integrity, vision, and compassion. These honorees represent the very best of our communities; individuals who break barriers, create opportunities, uplift others, and leave lasting footprints for future generations to follow.

This month, our city also reflected on the lives and enduring contributions of two extraordinary Chicago leaders whose legacies embody the values we celebrate through Men of Excellence: Reverend Jesse Louis Jackson Sr. and Spencer Leak Jr.

Few individuals have influenced Chicago, the nation, and the world more profoundly than Reverend Jesse Louis Jackson Sr., internationally respected civil rights leader, activist, humanitarian, statesman, and Chicago Defender Lifetime Achievement Honoree. For decades, Rev. Jackson stood at the forefront of movements for justice, equality, economic empowerment, voting rights, and opportunity for underserved communities.

Through Operation PUSH and the Rainbow Coalition, he inspired generations to believe in their ability to create meaningful change. Beyond the headlines and history books, Chicago knows Rev. Jackson as a tireless advocate, mentor, father figure, and champion for those whose voices too often went unheard.

I experienced that leadership firsthand on July 11, 2019, when Rev. Jackson stood beside me during a pivotal moment in Chicago Defender history; the public announcement of our transition from print to digital. His presence, encouragement, and unwavering support reinforced his commitment not only to civil rights and social justice, but also to preserving and advancing Black media as an essential voice within our community.

We also honor the remarkable life and legacy of Spencer Leak Jr., beloved son of Chicago, respected business leader, compassionate humanitarian, and Inaugural Chicago Defender Men of Excellence Honoree.

Spencer Leak Jr. led with quiet strength, grace, dignity, and an unwavering commitment to serving others. Through his professional leadership and personal generosity, he touched countless lives throughout our city. His impact was not measured solely by business success, but by the compassion he demonstrated, the relationships he nurtured, and the care he extended to families during some of life’s most difficult moments.

For many, including my own family, Spencer Leak Jr. leaves a legacy defined by service, empathy, and humanity. His life reminds us that true excellence is measured not only by what we achieve, but by how we treat people and the difference we make in their lives.

As we reflect on the significance of Father’s Day and celebrate another successful Chicago Defender Men of Excellence class, we are reminded that legacy is built through leadership, mentorship, sacrifice, wisdom, and service. The most impactful leaders understand that their greatest contribution is not merely what they accomplish, but what they inspire in others.

The Chicago Defender proudly celebrates Men of Excellence; past, present, and future, whose leadership continues to strengthen our communities and inspire generations. Their stories serve as powerful reminders that excellence is not a destination, but a lifelong commitment to purpose, service, and uplifting others.

To all fathers, father figures, mentors, community leaders, and Men of Excellence honorees, thank you for the example you set and the legacy you continue to build.

With gratitude and respect,
