P.R.E.T.T.Y. Inc. is a local organization that empowers Black girls and young women through transformative programming, mentorship, education, and leadership development.
The organization recently announced its latest initiative, the Academy of Confidence, an immersive seven-day transformational experience designed to empower Black girls ages 14–18 by building and restoring confidence through education, mentorship, and personal development.
The transformational journey culminates with the Academy of Confidence Debut on Sunday, August 23, 2026, at 4:00 p.m. at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Chicago–Alsip in Alsip, Illinois. Each participant will present her transformation through a dynamic presentation celebrating her growth, resilience, and future aspirations.
The Academy of Confidence provides a safe, supportive environment where participants are free from the distractions of social media, outside influences, and the pressures of everyday life. During the week-long experience, young women engage in workshops focused on mental health, physical health, sexual and reproductive health, college, trade school and career readiness, leadership development, and confidence building.
“It’s easier to build up young Black girls than it is to repair the confidence of broken Black girls,” said Dr. Hareder McDowell, Founder and CEO of P.R.E.T.T.Y. Inc.
Dr. McDowell, affectionately known as Dr. Mac by program participants, created the Academy of Confidence to equip young women with the tools they need to thrive personally, academically, and professionally.
During the week-long camp, participants learn directly from professionals, educators, healthcare experts, and community stakeholders committed to investing in the next generation of Black female leaders.
The Academy of Confidence is a member of the Girls Opportunity Alliance, a program of the Obama Foundation, and is a valued partner of the Chicago Public Schools.
