John Owens Joins ABC7 Chicago as Programming Producer

John Owens joins the ABC 7 Chicago’s Creative Services programming team as a programming producer, it was announced by David Lee, Vice President of Marketing, ABC 7.

His first day at the station is Monday, August 8.

According to Lee, “Owens is a critically acclaimed writer, producer, and videographer with over thirty years of experience in news. His expertise and knowledge of Chicago will make him a great addition to the Creative Services programming team at the city’s leading news station.”

Owens is no stranger to Chicago media as he has held positions with various media outlets in the city, including the Chicago Tribune. There, he climbed the ranks from Editorial Assistant to Senior Video Producer and Reporter. In addition to the Tribune, Owens also served as a reporter/editor at City News Bureau, editor and field producer at Fox News Chicago, and editor/producer at Chicagoland Television News. Since 2010, Owens has used his experience and wealth of knowledge to teach media courses to aspiring broadcast students at Kennedy-King College. Most recently, Owens has worked for Weigel Broadcasting as a writer and producer for the Decades Network, a CBS and Weigel Broadcasting joint venture. Owens was responsible for producing the daily news program “Through the Decades” and other special Decades series including “1968” and “Comedy Through the Decades.” He also wrote and produced programming on Me-TV, working on programs such as “Collector’s Call” and the daily morning entertainment program, “Toon in With Me.”

As a freelance writer, reporter, and researcher, Owens has his work published in the Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, Illinois Issues, Nieman Reports, Chicago Reader, New City, Block Club Chicago, and Screen. Owens also contributed as a free-lance broadcast producer for web documentaries, podcasts, and audio reports for PBS, NPR Illinois, Slate, and Link TV.

Owens currently serves as the President of the Chicago-Midwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences where he oversees all chapter events and most recently launched the first-ever NATAS Junior Board.
