Illinois Election Results and History Made in the South Suburbs.

Voters headed to the polls across Illinois to make sure their voices were heard in several local elections. The polls closed late Tuesday night with results coming in overnight.  History was made in the South Suburbs with the first youngest and first female African American mayor. Several mayors also won re-election in their village.

  • Tiffany Henyard, a village trustee, becomes the first youngest and black female mayor in Dolton, winning 82% of the vote against challenger Ronnie Burge with 18%.  
  • Robbins elected its first youngest black mayor, Darren E. Bryant, with 52% of the vote in an upset against incumbent Mayor Tyrone Ward with 48%.
  • Dixmoor Trustee Fitzgerald Roberts with 60% of the vote, beat incumbent Mayor Yvonne Davis with only 5%, while Cynthia Mossuto followed with 35%.
  • Former Mayor of Ford Heights, Charles R. Griffin, with 38% of the vote, beat incumbent Annie R. Coulter with 9%, LaDell Jones Sr. with 24%, Jimmie Watson with 7%, James E. Morgan with 16%, and Scottie L. Hatten with 6%.  In 2018, Griffin was accused of embezzling nearly $150,000 in public funds.  
  • Hazel Crest Mayor Vernard L. Alsberry won another term with 70% of the vote against candidate Marcia Hollis-Bratcher with 30%.
  • Markham, Mayor Roger A. Agpawa was re-elected, winning over 81% of the vote against candidate Jennifer Coles with 19%.
  • Matteson Mayor Sheila Yvonne Chalmers-Currin claimed victory in a landslide, winning 87% of the vote against Muhaymin Muhammad with 13%.
  • Olympia Fields Mayor Sterling “Stoney” Burke was re-elected, winning 46% of the vote against Cassandra J. Maltz with 18% and Desiree Watkins 36%.
  • Phoenix Mayor Terry R. Wells was re-elected, winning 90% of the vote against Dale C. Childs with 10%.
  • Sauk Village Mayor Derrick N. Burgess won another term, winning 53% of the vote against Debra “Debbie” Williams with 31% and Lynda G. Washington with 15%.
