For many students, choosing a career in healthcare begins with a simple but powerful question: Can I see myself doing that one day?
At South Shore International College Prep on Chicago’s South Side, that question is becoming easier to answer through a partnership between Zebralter Medical and the school’s science department.
Recognizing the need to create stronger pathways into healthcare careers, Science Chair Felix Egharevba sought innovative ways to expose students to opportunities beyond the classroom.
His vision aligned with the mission of Zebralter Medical, a nonprofit founded by physician Dr. Ifenlota (Lota) Ojiako to make science and healthcare accessible to all students.
Together, they created opportunities for students to interact directly with physicians, nurses, pharmacists, public health professionals, and other STEM leaders. Through career conversations, mentorship, and educational programming, students gain firsthand insight into
healthcare careers, educational pathways, and the rewards of serving their communities.
The impact extends beyond career awareness. Healthcare professionals share lessons on perseverance, leadership, overcoming obstacles, and the importance of giving back. Students are encouraged not only to pursue successful careers but also to become future leaders who
uplift their communities.
One of the partnership’s defining moments came in 2025 when South Shore International College Prep became the only Chicago Public School to qualify for the HOSA International Leadership Conference, one of the nation’s premier competitions for future healthcare professionals. Despite earning the opportunity to compete on a national stage, many students
faced a significant barrier: the cost of attending.
Recognizing the importance of this opportunity, Zebralter Medical helped raise funds to support the students’ journey to the national conference. The investment paid off. Students returned home with multiple national awards and recognitions, demonstrating what is possible when talent is matched with opportunity, mentorship, and support.
Today, the partnership continues to expand access to STEM careers through mentorship, healthcare career exploration, and exposure to professionals from diverse backgrounds and specialties. By connecting students with role models who have walked similar paths, the
program transforms aspirations into achievable goals.
As healthcare systems nationwide seek solutions to workforce shortages and a growing need for diverse talent, partnerships like the one between South Shore International College Prep and Zebralter Medical demonstrate the power of community-driven solutions.
