Blacks shut out of the Oscars … again

straight outta compton 2
Some people are stunned that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences completely shunned African Americans from the Academy Awards movie nominations categories once again — including the critically-acclaimed and blockbuster film Straight Outta Compton.
To add insult to injury, there were two people who got nominations for Straight Outta Compton as screenwriters — but they are a white guy and a white woman. Wow.
Worse off, there were only eight movies that were nominated this year when there could have been 10, but the Academy voters obviously did not believe Straight Outta Compton met the criteria as being one of the best movies of the year.
Netflix made a strong marketing push for Idris Elba’s powerful performance in his film, Beast of No Nation, but his Golden Globe nod instead went to Sylvester Stallone for his role in the hit movie Creed. Stallone went on to win the Globe award.
Michael B. Jordan, on the other hand, did not receive a nod for neither th Globes nor the Academy Awards for his role in Creed.
The New York Times may have put it best when it quipped: “In other words, the only Academy nods for two of the year’s biggest films about African-American characters went to white people.”
Incredible.
To be fair, there are others who are steaming in Hollywood today. Star Wars did not get a nomination for best picture, nor did J.J. Abrams for best director.
