“Crowning the Heritage” Celebrates African Art, Music, Culture, and Community in Chicago
Africa International House USA, Inc. proudly announces the return of the 36th Annual African Festival of the Arts (AFA), Chicago’s premier celebration of African and African diasporic culture, taking place Labor Day Weekend, Saturday, September 5, through Monday, September 7, 2026, in the historic Washington Park Sunken Garden. Festival gates will open daily from 10:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m., with the main entrance located at 55th Street and Cottage Grove Avenue.
This year’s festival theme, “Crowning the Heritage,” honors the enduring artistic, cultural, and spiritual traditions that connect people of African descent throughout the world. For more than three decades, the African Festival of the Arts has transformed Chicago into a vibrant crossroads of creativity, scholarship, music, cuisine, and community, welcoming tens of thousands of visitors each year.
The 2026 festival proudly welcomes internationally acclaimed sculptor Woodrow Nash as the featured artist. Returning to the African Festival of the Arts for the first time since 2019, Nash’s celebrated works embody the beauty, strength, and complexity of African and African American experiences.
Festivalgoers will also reconnect with many beloved artists and exhibitors who have long defined the AFA experience, including renowned painters Dayo Laoye and Frank Frazier, as well as distinguished fashion designers Jimi King and Dana Easter. Visitors can expect an extraordinary marketplace featuring museum-quality contemporary, traditional, and folk art alongside exciting works by emerging artists and designers from across Africa and the global African diaspora.
The festival’s entertainment lineup promises an eclectic blend of sounds and performances that audiences have come to expect. From rhythm and blues to jazz, world music, dance, and spoken word, the Dee Parmer Main Stage will once again showcase the richness and diversity of African cultural expression.
A special highlight of the weekend will be an unforgettable performance by Slum Village on Saturday, September 5th who will bring classic Detroit hip-hop energy to the stage. Gospel Sunday, September 6, will be a powerful celebration of faith, music, and inspiration as Chicago welcomes the legendary Queen of Gospel, Shirley Caesar, for an unforgettable performance that will uplift, inspire, and bring generations together. The festival will conclude on Monday, September 7, with a spectacular closing performance by acclaimed R&B singer-songwriter Leela James.
The 2026 African Festival of the Arts will also honor Chicago’s civic leadership. The festival proudly recognizes the Mayor of Chicago and the First Lady of Chicago as the 2026 AFA Grand BaBa and Grand YeYe, celebrating their service and commitment to the city’s diverse communities.
In addition to world-class performances and exhibitions, attendees can enjoy authentic cuisine from across the African world, children’s activities, wellness programming, cultural demonstrations, literary presentations, drumming, dance workshops, and opportunities to engage with artists, scholars, and entrepreneurs.
