Jazzin’ on Jefferson first shut down the streets in 2004 to bring jazz, blues, food, arts and crafts, and other activities to Detroit’s lower Eastside. Since that time it has grown to a two-day long event that draws over 18,000 people. This event brings the community together to celebrate the rich history of the neighborhood and highlight the work that is being done to create its future. Jazzin’ on Jefferson features a number of local and national artists. Past headliners include Marcus Belgrave, Eddie Bo & the Motor City All-Stars featuring Johnnie Basset, Robert Bradley’s Blackwater Surprise, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, and Lonnie Brooks Blues Band.

Enjoy more ooohs and new aaahs at the “wildest” evening of the summer! From 7-11:30 p.m. on Friday, June 14, the Detroit Zoological Society hosts its spectacular annual 21-and-older fundraising gala “Sunset at the Zoo: Boardwalk Bash,” presented by Strategic Staffing Solutions. Featuring the new Cotton Family Wetlands and Jane and Frank Warchol Beaver Habitat, the event will offer a sensational boardwalk-themed evening complete with tantalizing tastes, delectable drinks, magnificent music by The Jerry Ross Band, astonishing acts by Detroit Flyhouse, thrilling games and phenomenal “zoonique” auction prizes. With more than 40 of metro Detroit’s best restaurants and exclusive access to the Detroit Zoo’s award-winning habitats, Sunset at the Zoo is sure to be a fun-filled night. ‘The Run For the Ribbon’ Gala

Michigan Institute of Urology Men’s Health Foundation hosts its Fifth Annual “Run for the Ribbon” in support of the awareness, education, treatment, and research of prostate cancer and men’s health related issues in southeast Michigan. The Run for the Ribbon Gala — themed for an “Evening of Wonder” — will be filled with more than 350 friends, fine wine and food, live entertainment, and a charity raffle auction. The Gala begins at 7 p.m., Friday, June 14 at Andiamo in Warren. The Run for the Ribbon 5k Walk/Run, attracting morethan 1,600 participants each year, will be held at The Detroit Zoo, at 8 a.m. Sunday, June 16. Race participants will enjoy a T-shirt, ribbon and free entry to the Detroit Zoo following the race. For a small donation, registrants also can honor a loved one by placing his/her name on signage along the course.
