Timbaland Recaptures His Youth for Fox Drama ‘Empire’

Before Timbaland’s senses were insulted by Lifetime’s Aaliyah biopic last weekend, the producer spoke at length about his new gig as the songwriter and song producer for Fox’s upcoming drama “Empire.”
As previously reported, the series from Lee Daniels and Danny Strong stars Terrence Howard as the head of an influential hip hop label. After he is diagnosed with a debilitating illness, he must choose one of his sons to preserve its legacy amid drama from his gangster past and troublemaking ex-wife (Taraji P. Henson), fresh from prison.
Timbaland, who created Aaliyah’s signature sound on her second album “One in a Million” and went on to produce hits for Justin Timberlake, Madonna, Beyonce, Jay Z, Elton John…and yes, country star Keith Urban, says his process of creating music for a television show will be a bit different.
“They give me a plot,” begins Timberland, 42. “If they say, ‘Hey, here’s a guy, he’s got a blue shirt on. [Say it’s] you, but you look miserable, and you got family problems, or you got financial problems.’ I take those small elements and create my own story, and sometimes the writer writes around. What’s been great about this is some of my own stories, that I, that we create it, the writers went back and rewrote parts, in the parts, to make it really match up.
