Chicago is experiencing the highest number of homicides and victims of gun violence in over two decades. The victims are mostly Black males between the ages of 16-25 with Austin, Englewood, and Garfield neighborhoods leading in these numbers . Since January, there have been approximately 980 people shot and wounded and 169 killed across the city.
From a city who loves to brag about our winning and our losing teams, as well as our world famous food and stunning lakefront skyline–the topic of violence is nothing to brag about.
A local independent record company in Chicago decided to express their concern by producing a music video, “Stop the Violence”. Cole City Music recently released the song to bring awareness to the increase loss of lives being taken on the streets but to also reach young people through music with a positive message. The video features notable Chicago artists–Lil Ray formerly of Nex2Kin, Paris Beuller, Nate Cal, Shaky Shawn, Yo Boi Rell and eJilla Beat.
The Chicago Defender and our parent company, Real Times Media support the efforts of Cole City Music because this message resonates in most urban cities in the U.S. The backdrop is Chicago but the message is clear and the violence must stop in our communities–no matter where you reside.
The video features cameos from local and state public officials and community leaders that include Rev. Jesse Jackson, Alderman Jason Irvin, Alderman Walter Burnett, Jr., Commissioner Robert Steele, State Rep. Pamela Harris, State Rep. LaShawn Ford, State Senator Patricia Van Pelt, Alderman Michael Scott, Jr., Former Alderman and Committeeman Ed Smith, State Rep. Camille Lilly and People Against Violence Founder, Marco Johnson.
