Chastity Williams is the latest name to add to an ignominious roll call of death, another name etched in blood by the mayhem that seems to have taken over our neighborhoods.
We have to say, “Enough!”
But we have to do more than just say it. We have to do more than hold vigils and attend funerals and issue proclamations. We have to save our children.
We have to save them before they fall to an assassin’s bullets. We have to save them before they pledge allegiance to a gang. We have to save them before they decide that school just isn’t for them. We have to save them before they decide that selling drugs is preferable to any other job. We have to save them before they get pregnant, or make someone pregnant out of some misguided notion that it makes them a man or makes them a woman.
We have to save our children.
We have to save them not because they are poor. We have to save them not because they come from broken homes. We have to save them not because they are middle class, or urban or suburban, or pre-teens or teenagers. We have to save them whether they are valedictorians or dropouts.
We have to save our children.
