PARENT ORIENTATION/REGISTRATION APRIL 23RD FOR SPRING SEMESTER OF CHICAGO PRE-COLLEGE SCIENCE & ENGINEERING PROGRAM

Registration and orientation is now open for the Spring session of Saturday programs in the Chicago Pre-College Science & Engineering Program (ChiS&E), a leading science, technology, math and engineering program for students in grades K-7.

Free and open to the public, the orientation is designed to inform parents about the curriculum, the goals and the child-centered projects that will engage each ChiS&E student in science-and-math-based hands-on learning. Parents are an integral part of the process and a valued partner. To participate, RSVP at info@chiprep.org.

The Parent Orientation for grades K-5 will be held on Saturday, April 23rd from 9 – 11am at the University of Illinois at Chicago, Lecture Hall A (behind Student Center East), 750 S. Halsted Street. Registration is open to new students in grades K-2 and current students only in grades 3-5. Keynote speaker is civil engineer Alexis Billingslea-Brown.

Currently employed at the Illinois Department of Transportation, Billingslea-Brown is a Bridge Inspection Engineer. She holds a B.S. in Architectural Engineering – Structural Design from the Milwaukee School of Engineering in Milwaukee, WI and an M.S. Civil Engineering – Structures and Transportation from the University of Illinois at Chicago.  She has been an active member of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) since 1992, having served on numerous committees and holding several offices. She chaired the NSBE Chicago Chapter National Engineers Week Program at IIT from 2013 to 2015. She has been a member of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) since 2006 and currently serves as its Scholarship Chair. Ms. Brown has coached several Future City teams and served as a judge for the CPS Annual Science Fair, First Lego League Robotics (FLL) and First Robotics Tournaments.  

Billingslea-Brown will speak about what it takes to become a civil engineer, what being a civil engineer involves, her personal career journey and opportunities especially for women in the future of this industry.  In addition, during the event participants will become familiar with the Chi S&E teachers, their objectives and assignments that will build upon previous concepts.
