Reboot Illinois: A minimum wage history in Illinois

A bill before the Illinois General Assembly seeks to raise the state’s minimum wage from its current $8.25 an hour to $10 an hour over three years. This is a follow-up to a bill in the previous legislative session that sought to raise the minimum wage to as much as much as $15.25 an hour over a 10-year period. That bill never gained traction.

Proponents say linking the minimum wage to inflation will allow workers at the bottom of the pay scale to earn a living wage. Business groups say it will drive thousands of jobs out of Illinois and into neighboring states, where the minimum wage already is lower.

Here is a look at Illinois’ recent history of minimum wage hikes compared to that of its neighbors.
