Chicago Defender Charities ® Inc. is thrilled to present the 93rd Annual Bud Billiken® Parade! This legendary back to school event will take place Saturday, August 13 in Chicago’s Washington Park, featuring Chicago’s finest marching bands, dance groups, drill teams, celebrities. Chicago’s very own hometown hero, internationally recognized, award-winning, Grammy-nominated R&B singer and producer, Jeremih, who will serve as the Grand Marshal for this year’s parade and festival. ABC7’s Cheryl Burton, Jim Rose, and Hosea Sanders will serve as hosts, along with fellow colleagues, Karen Jordan and Terrell Brown, covering the parade grounds. This year’s theme is the Power of Bud Billiken 365, highlighting and celebrating organizational, year-round programming for youths.
Known as Jeremy Felton during his days as a student at Morgan Park High School, Jeremih is a CPS alumni and humanitarian. The Chicago native will donate hundreds of book bags and school supplies at the Bud Billiken Parade and Festival. “I am excited and honored to pay homage to the legacy of the Bud Billiken parade, which is a huge part of my childhood.” said Jeremih.
“As our community continues to recover from the effects of the pandemic over the past couple of years, it is exciting that we are able to come together this year and celebrate the students of Chicago as they head back to school.” said Myiti Sengstacke-Rice, president/CEO of the Chicago Defender Charities®Inc. and Bud Billiken® Parade Chair.
Joining Jeremih in the action will be his fellow cast member from Starz’ hit show ‘Power’ and Chicago’s very own star, Joseph Sikora (Tommy). Other esteemed honorary Grand Marshals include General Rodney Boyd, Commander of the Illinois Army Guard Brigade; Dr. Cheryl Green, president of Governor State University; Brett Hart, president of United Airlines; Dorri McWhorter, chief executive officer of YMCA of Chicago; Dr. Sanja Rickette Stinson, chief executive officer and executive director of Matthew House; Mark Edmond, Jamel Lewis, and Charles Alexander, the owners and founders of Chicago-based bread company, Black Bread Co., and Chicago’s favorite content creator and viral social media star, Korporate. Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker will also participate in parade festivities with other confirmed Chicago dignitaries.
The parade will start at 10:00 a.m. on 39th street and Martin Luther King Drive, with Jeremih leading the parade procession south on King Drive, going through Washington Park, and ending at Garfield Boulevard (55th Street).
To produce the annual Bud Billiken®Parade celebration, Chicago Defender Charities®, Inc. partnered closely with the City of Chicago to create an event production plan to ensure everyone has a safe and amazing time.
