More senseless murders

CHICAGO — Martell J. Lawrence, 16, was  identified as the boy fatally shot Saturday in the 6500 block of South Marshfield Avenue, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.
In Englewood, at 12:18 p.m., police responded to a call of shots fired in the 6500 block of South Marshfield. When officers arrived, they found Lawrence with a gunshot wound to his head, said Officer Bari Lemmon, a Chicago police spokeswoman.
He was taken to Holy Cross Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Lemmon said.

Unfortunately Lawrence was not the only loss  due to murder over the weekend. Four people were killed and at least 15 others have been wounded in shootings across Chicago throughout the weekend.  Saturday afternoon, Milon L. Carvis, 42, was standing on the sidewalk about 4:15 p.m. with several other adults in the 7800 block of South Seeley in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood on the South Side. The shooter then ran away eastbound. The victim  was shot in the torso and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead at 5:07 p.m., authorities said. He lived in the 8400 block of South Hoyne Avenue, according to the medical examiner’s office.

Just four hours earlier Martell J. Lawrence had been shot to death. On Friday afternoon, a man was shot to death in the Englewood neighborhood.

The responding officers  heeded  to a call of shots fired about 2 p.m. Friday in the 7000 block of South Normal Avenue where they found 18-year-old Azun Buckner with multiple gunshot wounds, authorities said. The fallen Buckner, of the 6900 block of South Eggleston, was taken to Saint Bernard Hospital where he later died, authorities said. A police source said he was a documented gang member and that makes it doubly sad. Too many of our youth are caught up gang affiliations which brings them to an early death.

About 11:30 a.m. Friday, a 22-year-old man, Jerome Anderson was fatally shot while walking near Washington Park.  Anderson was walking in the 5800 block of South King Drive when a gold vehicle pulled up and an armed male suspect got out, according to police and the medical examiner’s office. The suspect opened fire then drove off.

Anderson, of the 7900 block of South Wabash, suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead about 30 minutes later, authorities said. According to police he was also  a documented gang member, and was on parole at the time of the shooting.

A possible domestic-related  shooting  involving a 17-year-old girl was hurt in a nonfatal shooting on the South Side that happened about 2 p.m. in the 1400 block of West 88th Street. The girl was shot in the foot and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where she was in good condition, police said.

At 11:40 a.m., a 25-year-old man was shot in the North Lawndale neighborhood on the West Side.

The man was walking in the 4200 block of West Cermak Road when someone fired shots out of a passing blue van and hit him in the leg.   He was rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition, police said. Initially, his condition was serious.

Several hours earlier, 25 year-old a man was shot while walking on the Northwest Side in the 4600 block of West Diversey about 4:55 a.m. when someone fired shots from a passing red vehicle, according to police. He was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the leg, police said. He was in good condition. It’s possible that the icident is gang related.

There were at least 12 additional  people who were  wounded in shootings since 1:20 p.m. Friday.

And further  Chicago Police officers shot a man after he pointed a gun at them Saturday afternoon in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood on the Southwest Side. The incident occurred about 4:15 p.m., gang enforcement officers on patrol in the 6100 block of South Rockwell as an officer walked up and announced himself to the 34-year-old man for a narcotics investigation.  According to a statement from Chicago Police the man turned and pointed a handgun at him afterwhich he  ran away. Eventually he ran into two more officers and  again pointed his gun at the officers.  They shot him in both legs and later learned that he is a convicted felon on parole. The man was taken to Christ Medical Center, where his condition was stabilized.
