More foreign language offerings for CPS students

CHICAGO    Officials say the Chicago Public Schools next year will expand its foreign language curriculum, teaching more students Chinese and Arabic, and launching Russian in several schools.

School officials say with more than 7,000 Chicago students studying Chinese, the district has the largest such program in the nation. Nearly 300 students in the district are studying Arabic.

Officials say the expansion of the Chicago, Arabic and Russian language program will be paid for by cuts in other parts of the budget. It will allow officials to hire about 15 new language teachers for 15 schools.

Chicago Mayor Richard Daley says he hopes announcement of the expanded language program would lead to additional language curriculum funding from community and business leaders. (AP)
