“People learn to hate. They can be taught to love. For love comes more naturally to the human heart.” Those are the words of Nelson Mandela as spoken by Idris Elba in the first teaser for “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.” The film’s international trailer made its way online on Friday morning — https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R5Az3bOwrz8&feature=player_embedded.
Shot from above, the quiet and moving clip is brief and effective: It offers but a glimpse of Elba’s portrayal of Mandela in the film, as the actor is shown walking up a hill with a gait reminiscent of the South African president. “Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom” focuses on Mandela’s younger days, but the teaser trailer shows an older version of the beloved world leader. (You’ll notice his gray hair.)
The Weinstein Company is set to release “Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom” on Nov. 29; many are already expecting Elba to factor into the Oscar race for his performance, sight unseen. Watch the international teaser above; stay tuned for a full U.S. trailer in the coming weeks.
