You might have already heard the news: On Tuesday night, a lucky person from New Jersey, one of the luckiest in human existence, had the winning Mega Millions ticket, worth $1.128 billion (!!!). It was the fifth-largest Mega Millions jackpot in that game’s history.
The winning Mega Millions numbers were: 7-11-22-29-38 and Mega Ball 4.
But several players in Illinois also came away as winners from the Tuesday night Mega Millions drawing.
One such player purchased their ticket at a Bartlett, Illinois gas station. They won $1 million by matching all five numbers, earning the Mega Millions’ second-top prize.
Other winners who bought tickets on the South and West Sides of Chicago and in a few suburbs didn’t do too shabby either.
Two players got four numbers and the Mega Ball, plus they added the game’s ‘Megaplier’ feature, winning $20,000 a piece. Five players matched four numbers and the Mega Ball to win $10,000 each.
The Mega Millions roll started on December 9, 2023, during which over 925,000 winning tickets were sold, and Illinois Lottery players won nearly $9.4 million in prizes.
Each Mega Millions win benefits not only the players but also the retailers who sell the winning tickets, receiving a 1% selling bonus based on the prize amount.
Additionally, Illinois education saw a significant boost, with the Illinois Lottery contributing over $22 million to the Common School Fund from nearly $56 million in total ticket sales, supporting K-12 education statewide.
Winners have a year from the winning draw date to claim their prize. The Illinois Lottery advises all winners to write their name on the back of their ticket and store it safely until they’re ready to claim their winnings.
