The tragic Bronx apartment fire that killed 17 people and injured 63 others is being described by officials as one of the worst fires in the city’s modern history.

The fire broke out Sunday morning (January 9) after a space heater malfunctioned, NYC Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro confirmed. Approximately 200 fire department personnel arrived on the scene in minutes after multiple emergency calls came in.

NYC Mayor Eric Adams said the building was home to a predominately Muslim community with many tenants being immigrants from Gambia.

In the wake of the fire, local community organizers and charities are doing their part to support those impacted, including those still fighting for their lives at Bronx-area hospitals.
