URBANA, Ill. — Dozens of University of Illinois faculty have signed letters to a pair of newspapers in support of Chancellor Richard Herman in the school’s admissions scandal. Forty-eight professors signed a letter sent Monday to The (Champaign) News-Gazette defending Herman’s handling of admissions for politically connected applicants at the Urbana-Champaign campus. And 16 members of the College of Law faculty praised Herman in a letter to the Chicago Tribune. Herman testified before a special commission Monday about law school admissions. Gov. Pat Quinn created the panel to look into the school’s list of politically connected students favored by lawmakers and university trustees. The Tribune first reported the existence of the clout list in May. ______ Copyright 2009 Associated Press, The News-Gazette. All rights reserved.
