Dolton Mayor William “Bill” Shaw died in his home Nov. 26 after a four-year battle with cancer. He was 71.
Shaw was elected Dolton mayor in 1997. Prior to that, in 1982, he was elected to the first of five terms as an Illinois state representative of the 34th District. He then served as a state senator from the 15th District until he was defeated in 2002.
As a senator, Shaw co-sponsored legislation that made it mandatory for African American history to be taught in Illinois public schools.
Shaw was the twin brother of former Cook County Commissioner and Chicago alderman Robert Shaw.
In addition to his brother, William Shaw is survived by a son, Victor Shaw.
A public visitation will be held for Shaw Wednesday, 10 a.m.-7 p.m. at New Zion Christian Fellowship Church of Dolton, 14200 S. Chicago Road. Funeral services will be held Thursday at the church: 9 a.m. wake followed by funeral at 10 a.m.
