Cubs Show Love to HBCUs

As the whistle blew, the band started playing and the procession of the Hampton University Marching Band entered Gallagher Way at Wrigley Field. Dressed in blue and white, the marching band, majorettes and cheerleaders treated the crowd to a show.

The performance on Friday was part of the Chicago Cubs’ HBCU Day. The event was held in conjunction with the Chicago Football Classic which took place on Saturday, Sept. 14, at Soldiers Field. The football game, now in its 22nd year, hosted the Howard University Bisons against the Hampton University Pirates in a battle for the “Real HU.” The Pirates won 41-20.

The Cubs organization also presented the United Negro College Fund with a check in the amount of $25,000.

“The $25,000 was in support of UNCF and our’ A Mind Is’ Gala chaired by Toi Salter. The Cubs CEO Tom Ricketts chaired the Gala in 2017, and the Cubs organization and Julian Green continue to support UNCF and HBCUs,” said Lisa Rollins, UNCF area development director.

Wendy Davis who recently portrayed Nuri In Mara Brock Akil’s OWN show, “Love Is” threw out the first pitch. The Cubs beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 17-8.
