A high school principal who allowed her college preparatory school gymnasium to be rented out for two juke parties now must pay for it out of her pocket. After an investigation by the Chicago Public Schools’ inspector general verified that the parties took place, Dushon Brown, principal of Gwendolyn Brooks High School, 250 E. 111th St., reportedly had to take 20 days of unpaid leave this summer, which cost her over $7,000. Monique Bond, a spokesman for Chicago Public Schools, could not confirm or deny Brown was punished. “The parties took place before I joined CPS so I would need to get clarification from our Law Department before commenting further,” she told the Defender. Bond joined CPS in January as its communications director after previously serving as news affairs director for the Chicago Police Department. But Brown did confirm she authorized the school’s gym to be used for a party in December 2007 and February 2008 but did so as a fundraiser. “I think it was very inappropriate and excessive especially since it was all about trying to raise money for the kids,” Brown said. ______ Copyright 2009 Chicago Defender.
