Chicago Skyline to Glow Purple for Domestic Violence Awareness Campaign

Must read

Chicago will turn its gaze toward the issue of domestic violence this month as a local campaign invites the entire city to participate in a week of advocacy. The organization Love and Protect Wisdom has announced its second annual Tower Over Domestic Violence initiative, scheduled for October 23 through October 29. During this time, the group is asking residents, businesses, and faith institutions across all neighborhoods to illuminate their properties in purple. This visual display is intended to serve as a sign of solidarity with survivors and families who have been affected by domestic violence.

Major city landmarks are expected to join the effort by lighting their facades, which will create a unified purple glow across the downtown skyline. Beyond the public demonstration, the initiative serves a functional goal of raising capital for a specific support program. Organizers are collecting donations for a project called TLC, also known as The Love Continues. This initiative provides resources and long term support for youth ages 0 to 22 who have lost a parent or primary caregiver due to domestic violence homicide.

Founder Loné Williams noted that the campaign is designed to bring a hidden struggle into the public eye while providing direct assistance to those navigating the aftermath of a tragedy. She explained that the goal is for survivors and their families to look across the city and recognize they are not alone. The organization emphasizes that while the lights are a symbol, the ongoing support for children facing trauma is the core priority of their mission. By fostering community engagement, the campaign aims to ensure that the needs of young people who have experienced such losses remain a focus for the city.

A fundraising event is scheduled for October 26 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the VU Rooftop, located at 133 E. Cermak Rd. Supporters, advocates, and members of the public are invited to attend the gathering to contribute to the cause and learn more about the services offered by TLC. Participants who choose to light their own homes or storefronts are encouraged to share their photos on social media using the hashtag #TowerOverDomesticViolence. Further information on registration, donations, and the full schedule of activities can be found at the organization website.
