CHICAGO (AP) — The city of Chicago is phasing in its new plan for picking up trash.

It’s called grid garbage collection. Trash collectors will be able to use more systematic collection routes instead of going by ward boundaries. Workers will use main streets and natural boundaries on their routes.

The new system begins Monday in parts of the North Side.

The goal is to improve collection performance. City officials say the change will also save millions in taxpayer money.

Thomas Byrne is the commission of the Chicago’s Department of Streets and Sanitation. He says the department is trying to equalize refuse collection service citywide.
