Sunday, May 9th, marks this year’s Mother’s Day celebration. This day recognizes the tireless efforts of motherhood. Many have made reservations, while others are currently planning. Some are shopping for gifts for their biological moms and mother figures. Several others are gearing up for homespun celebrations to honor the one who gave them life.
As preparations for celebrating mom begins, some people dread this day. While Mother’s Day is for celebrating, many only have memories of their mother to celebrate. This can be a difficult time for those who have lost their mothers and may not desire to celebrate it. It can also be challenging for those whose mothers are living but are distant. Whatever the case may be, Mother’s Day is a day for celebration. If you are unsure of how you can celebrate mom’s memory, check out the list below.
- Watch one of her favorite movies. Laugh or cry along with it and discover why this was her favorite.
- If your mom was a master chef, get in the kitchen! Whip up one of her specialty dishes and share it with loved ones.
- Give gifts to women who have been mother figures to you. If someone filled the gap in the absence of your mom, honor her on this day.
- Spend time with supportive women in your family—exchange stories about your mom with them. You will be glad that you did.
- If you have kids, begin an unusual Mother’s Day tradition. Step outside of your comfort zone. Go on an adventure and celebrate with your children while you can.
- Take a soul-cleansing vacation to clear your spirit. While on this excursion, engage in peaceful activities. Be sure they fill you with the strength you need to adjust to life without mom.
- Purge your soul. Cry as much as your heart will allow you to. When you are finished, replenish your spirit with loving thoughts about your mom. If you feel the need to cry again, do so.
- Gather up photos of you and your mom and make a collage! This way, you will have your favorite memories in one space.
Waking up without the physical presence of a loved one makes life’s journey arduous. Simple things that remind you of them can be mentally and emotionally taxing. Days like Mother’s Day intensify memories of loss. From seeing balloons in stores to different commercials encouraging people to celebrate mom, one can understand why celebrating can be hard. Nevertheless, it is important to push through and find joy in this day. However, if your grief becomes overwhelming, seek counseling. There is no shame in getting help for your pain.
Mothers are unique creations. Honoring them must be a daily practice. If your mother is still living, be grateful. Spend as much time with her as you can. If she is no longer living, be thankful for the time you had. Carry the memories you have of her in your heart. If your mother is estranged, try to reconcile, with or without her, peacefully. However, you spend Mother’s Day, be sure to find peace and joy for yourself and those around you.
