In the wake of a 14 year-old boy who duped Chicago police into thinking he was a real police officer, a West Side alderman is now considering an ordinance to increase fines for impersonators.
On Monday Alderman Isaac Carothers (29th) will hold a meeting with the Police & Fire committee, which he chairs, to discuss an ordinance that would increase the fine from a minimum of $10 to $500 but not to exceed $1,000.
Community residents said increasing fines are good but more sanctions are needed to deter people, especially teens from posing as cops.
“I think it would be good to include some jail time as one of the punishments,” said West Side resident Traci Carter, 45. “These kids need to know that what that young man did was not cool and there are consequences to your actions.”
