On Sunday, a 43 year-old man armed with a knife was transferred to Chicago’s Swedish Covenant Hospital for a psychiatric evaluation after he barricaded himself inside his West Side apartment. Chicago police said the man was not charged with a crime but was taken into protective custody because he posed a threat to himself. Because he was not charged with a crime, police declined to release his name. “As of today, the individual had not been charged with anything so his name is not a matter of public record,” said Officer Daniel O’Brien. According to police, around 10 p.m. Sunday officers arrived at the 6000 block of West Wabansia Avenue where they found the man huddled inside his basement apartment holding a knife. After negotiations, the man surrendered to police. It was not immediately known how police got involved but O’Brien said it might have been from a 911 call. Detectives are investigating to see what caused the incident. ______ Copyright 2009 Chicago Defender. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
