No Charges for Man Accused in Shooting Death of Assistant Principal

Update: No criminal charges have been filed against the concealed-carry license holder accused of fatally shooting a 32-year-old man in a Loop high-rise on Thursday night.

On Thursday after 7:30 p.m., Abnerd Joseph was shot multiple times after an altercation with another man, a 45-year-old CCL holder, on the first block of East Monroe Street. Joseph died shortly after at Northwestern Hospital.

What led to the confrontation and Joseph’s fatal shooting remains unknown.

In the immediate aftermath of the incident, police had detained the accused shooter. As of Saturday, that man was no longer in police custody.

Joseph was the assistant principal of culture at Intrinsic High School’s Downtown Campus. At Intrinsic, Joseph’s focus areas included student discipline, student safety, school climate, and school-wide transitions and procedures, according to the charter school’s website.

Joseph came to Intrinsic after working at KIPP Metro Atlanta Schools.

“Known affectionately to many as “Nerd,” he was a loving son, a devoted brother, an affectionate uncle, a true friend, a talented artist, and an inspiring teacher and administrator,” according to a GoFundMe page launched in the aftermath of his death.

The GoFundMe page is collecting donations for a memorial fund for Joseph’s family. For more information or to donate, visit this link.
