ABC7 is reporting that a man and a teenager were killed, and at least seven other people were hurt in shootings across the city Wednesday afternoon. A 9-year-old boy was shot while riding in a car with his mother.
The boy was shot in the chest about 5:30 p.m. in the 6700 block of South Evans Avenue, police said. The boy was in critical condition at University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital, police said. A police source says the shooting may have been gang related, that the shooting target may have been a man who was in the passenger seat of the vehicle.
A car was surrounded by crime tape as police looked for evidence and bullets. Inside the car was a 9-year- old boy shot in the chest. Police say it happened on South Evans Wednesday as the boy was riding with his mother and her boyfriend, who was in the passenger seat.
The boy’s mother drove him to the hospital where he is battling his injuries.
“It is so sad. It is not right for kids to get shot over this,” said neighbor Dejuan Roseman, who lives in the same apartment complex as the victim. They say he lives with his mother and her five other kids. They say they have never noticed any gang activity.
“I don’t think that is the case. Every time I see her, and I live in the building with her and communicate with her every day, and I just talked to her yesterday morning, and it was just her and her kids. Maybe her and her kids and her sister and cousin, but I don’t ever see her with gang members or nothing,” said Dee Roseman.
The Rosemans do say they are frightened over gang violence in the neighborhood. Their home at 65th and Maryland is also the same area where a 6-month-old was shot and killed in March.
“They shot a little boy over here. They shoot a 9-year-old boy. Just do something else, I guess. Have a great life and stop shooting kids,” Roseman said.
A separate gang-related shooting left one teenage boy dead, and another seriously hurt in the Southwest Side Gage Park neighborhood.
Fifteen-year-old Miguel Villegas was killed when a shooter came out of an alley and opened fire on the two teens about 6:30 p.m. in the 5700 block of South Washtenaw Avenue, authorities said.
