NORTH MIAMI, Florida– Authorities are investigating why police shot an unarmed therapist as he lay on the ground with an autistic patient during a standoff with law enforcement.
Charles Kinsey, 47, was in the middle of a street with the patient when officers arrived, Kinsey’s lawyer, Hilton Napoleon, told The New York Times. Adding that, when the officers drew their weapons, his client told them firearms were not necessary, which is why he lay down and tried to explain the situation.
According to the Miami Herald, North Miami Assistant Police Chief Neal Cuevas said that an officer fired three times, hitting Kinsey once in the leg. The officer has since been placed on administrative leave and an investigation is being led by the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office.
Wednesday, Napoleon said he met with city officials to discuss a possible settlement, reports the Times.
“The best thing that the city of North Miami can do is come out and condemn the officer,” he said.
