Sparked by a thrilling 6-5 victory over Gwendolyn Brooks in the second round of the city playoffs and a 12-2 decision over Kenwood in the quarterfinals, Whitney Young remains the number one team in the weekly Public League baseball poll.
The defending city champion, Whitney Young has been in the number one spot in the weekly poll all season. Trailing Brooks 2-1 early in their second round match up, Whitney Young tied the game on a homer by catcher Julian Kenner and managed to take the lead 4-2 on RBI hits by Vallmer Jordan and Eric Tabb. Brooks, however, came storming back to take a 5-4 lead in the top of the seventh inning. Young, though, rallied in the bottom of the seventh inning to stay alive in the playoffs.
With two outs, Dae Bowdon walked and took second on a passed ball. Bowden then tied the game before the Dolphins got the win on a game-winning double by Jack Cinoman. In the quarterfinal win over Kenwood, Cinoman did the job on the mound for the Dolphins hurling five strong innings while Jordan drove in three runs. The win advanced Young to the city semifinals.
Simeon also reached the semifinals with an 11-2 rout of Jones College Prep as Michael McSmith pitched a complete game and also was 4-for-4 at the plate. The Public League championship game will be played Tuesday at U.S. Cellular Field. Simeon regained the second spot in the weekly poll with Lake View third, Lane Tech fourth and Jones College Prep fifth.
Rounding out the top ten are Kenwood, sixth; Von Steuben, seventh; Taft, eighth; Payton College prep, ninth; and Washington tenth.
