A 46-year-old Calumet Park woman is facing misdemeanor charges in connection with the death of a pit bull that died after being left outside in below freezing temperatures, Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart said today.
Tracy Cherry has been charged with animal cruelty and owner’s duties.
Sheriff’s Animal Crimes unit received a tip on Jan. 16 about a dog who was found dead in a dog house that was located outside an apartment in the 1400 block of West 123rd Street in Calumet Park.
Members of the Sheriff’s Animal Crimes Unit and the South Suburban Humane Society went to the location, found the dog’s body in the dog house, and removed it. According to necropsy, the 9-year-old male white pit bull died of hypothermia. The recorded low for Calumet Park on Jan. 5 was -1 degree. The high on Jan. 6 was -1 degree, and the low, -15 degrees.
During the course of their investigation, Sheriff’s Police learned that the dog had been let out on the afternoon of Jan. 5 and had remained outside for about 12 hours. Police also learned that Cherry found the dog’s body on Jan. 6.
Sheriff’s Police arrested Cherry on Jan. 20.
Cherry’s next court date is scheduled for Feb. 3 at the Markham Courthouse.
Sheriff Dart reminds the public that the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty by the government in the court of law.
