Continuing its examination of the Chicago Police Department’s (CPD) policies, the U.S. Department of Justice, Civil Right Division will hold a fifth community meeting on October 24, at Malcolm X College starting at 6:30 p.m., 1900 W. Jackson Blvd.
At the forum, which is open to the public, Justice Department investigators will hear testimony from Chicagoans that have had encounters with the police and would like to share their stories. Also, the department will be giving the community an update on the progress of their ongoing investigation into “patterns and practices” which is now in its tenth month.
With Chicago being the largest investigation in the department’s history it’s anticipated that the review could last a minimum of one year and continue for at least another full year said one retired officer who was familiar with the situation. “There are so many layers to CPD and they need to take their time and get it right,” says the source.
The Defender reported on the issue of the Department of Justice consent decrees in other cities like Cleveland, Ohio and Seattle, Washington, back in April 2016; soon Chicago may be added to that list.
