Will Burns often worked behind the political scenes, but this time the spotlight is on him.

He is a candidate for state representative of the 26th District that represents portions of the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 20th and 42nd Wards, and he has a long list of endorsements on his side, including Mayor Richard M. Daley, state Sen. Kwame Raoul (D-13th), state Rep. Ken Dunkin (D- 5th) and each alderman of the wards the district represents.

Burns beat incumbent Elga Jeffries in the primary election. Jeffries was tapped to finish the term left by her boss, the late Lou Jones. She served as Jones’ chief of staff.

As a former chief of staff to former Illinois Senate President Emil Jones Jr., Burns worked on various policies and bills including access to health care, education, minority business development and property tax relief.

Burns served as U.S. Sen. Barack Obama’s deputy campaign manager eight years ago during the now-presidential Democratic nominee’s campaign for the state Senate and was also endorsed by Obama during the primary election.

Burns said he “knows what it takes to get the job done” and looks forward to serving the constituents of the district.

His opponent is Sylvester “Junebug” Hendricks. Hendricks made a failed bid to unseat Alderman Leslie Hairston (5th) in the February 2007 municipal election.
