Will and Jada: Lengthy marriage, yes, open marriage, no

Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith were married in 1997, and have been on the Hollywood “A” list ever since. But also true is that for the duration of their marriage, there have been rumors ranging from “trouble in paradise” to impending divorce.
According to Pinkett Smith, every two years or so there is a new rash of rumors. Why them? They are not certain but agree that it might be due, in part, to them having been identified so many times as “a perfect couple.”
The rumormongers work overtime in their quest to “find something.”One recurring rumor is that the Smiths have an “open marriage.” That is, are free to be with others. That, says Pinkett Smith, is not going to happen.
There is much to be said for not dignifying rumor with responses, but there are times when severe annoyance sets in, creating a need to set the record straight.
“There are for more important things to talk about in regards to what is happening in the world than whether we have an open marriage or not,” said Pinkett Smith.
“Do we believe that the more control we put on someone, the safer we are? Do we believe loving someone means owning them? Should we be married to individuals who cannot be responsible for themselves and their families within their freedom?”
The presumed answer to all three questions is “no.”
Pinkett Smith continued, “What about trust and love? Will and I both can do whatever we want because we trust each other to do so. This does not mean we have an open relationship. This means we have a grown one.”
