History was made on the biggest night in film.
On Sunday (March 2), Wicked’s Paul Tazewell took home the award for Best Costume Design at the 97th Academy Awards. Sunday’s win made Tazewell, who previously earned a nomination for his work on West Side Story, the first Black man to earn an Oscar for Costume Design.
“This is absolutely astounding. Thank you Academy for this very significant honor,” Tazewell opened his acceptance speech.
The Oscar-winner then acknowledged his history-making feat, for which he received a standing ovation from the audience.
“I am the first Black man to receive the Costume Design Award for my work on Wicked. I am so proud of this,” Tazewell said to roaring applause.
During his speech, Tazewell expressed his gratitude to Wicked stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande and the rest of the cast for trusting him to bring their characters to life.
“This is everything. Thank you,” he concluded his speech.
Ahead of Sunday’s ceremony, Wicked earned nominations in 10 categories. Erivo could also join a handful of stars who have achieved the coveted EGOT status if she wins the Oscars’ Best Actress award for her role as Elphaba in the hit film.
Tazewell appeared on the red carpet before the show, where he described how “meaningful” it would be for him to be awarded for his costume work.
“To be honored in that way is the highlight of my career,” Tazewell told Entertainment Tonight before his historic win.
