Justin Fields was one of the most sacked quarterbacks last year. So, it’s only natural that his team, the Chicago Bears, does the right thing and gets this man a bodyguard.
That’s precisely what they did when they drafted Darnell Wright, an offensive tackle out of the University of Tennessee, with the 10th pick of the first round.
A scouting report from NFL.com describes Wright as a “big-bodied tackle who carries his weight well.”
Chicago’s selection of the mammoth, 6-5, 335-pound tackle had professional football observers and armchair quarterbacks abuzz. The good news is that the reaction to the Bears first-rounder seems mostly positive.
These folks had high praise for the Bears selection of Wright:

Love Ryan Poles’ plan for his O-line.
Take Darnell Wright, who has Pro Bowl potential, and plug him on right side where he is most comfortable and give Braxton Jones another developmental season he deserves at left tackle.#Bears got nastier and more athletic last night. pic.twitter.com/gdx4QXaG2K

Bears take Darnell Wright #10
My #1 OT in this class. I love this guy. If you want to play smashmouth football, he's for you.
His athleticism might not be as squeaky-clean as Paris Johnson, but I like his strength to translate well to the NFL.— Chris Simms (@CSimmsQB) April 28, 2023
Anyone who doesn’t like the Bears pick just doesn’t understand football. It’s ultra important to have a strong O and D line. They will take care of DLine tomorrow

But the elephant in the room was the Bears trading back one spot from the ninth pick so that the Philadelphia Eagles can select defensive tackle Jalen Carter from the University of Georgia, perhaps the most talented player in the draft.
The Bears could have had Carter, and folks had plenty to say about that.
Darnell Wright is a damn good pick for the #Bears at No. 10.
If you're not taking Jalen Carter, moving back a spot for extra draft capital and taking your top OT available makes a lot of sense. Stud player in Wright, premium position, massive need.

Listen not saying that Darnell Wright isn’t a good pick.. just frustrating when you see your team passing up on possibly one of the best talents in the draft..

The bottom line is that nobody will know how these guys will turn out until three years down the road.
Here’s the main takeaway so far: The Bears seem invested in protecting their franchise quarterback.
