Jela McKinney, a freshman at Chicago High School for the Arts emerged a national winner in the NAACP’s Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO) competition held July 20-22 in Los Angeles. McKinney picked up a bronze medal in the Visual Arts Drawing category.

The Westside branch had a total of seven youth competing in this year’s competition: Breanna Smith, Performing Arts Music: Inst./ Classical; Kayla Robertson, Performing Arts Music: Inst./ Contemporary; Layla West, Performing Arts Oratory; Shaondell Black, Visual Arts Filmmaking; Destiny Thompson, Performing Arts Dramatics; and Ebonee Wilkins, Visual Arts Scuplture.
