RICHMOND, Va. – Olympic gymnast Gabrielle Douglas has been recognized by the Virginia General Assembly.
Douglas received a standing ovation Tuesday by the state Senate, which presented the Virginia Beach native a framed copy of a resolution honoring her for her accomplishments.
Douglas won Olympic gold at the age of 16 in the 2012 London games. She was the first woman to win gold in the individual all-around competition.
The U.S. women’s team also won gold.
The resolution says Douglas “captured the hearts of millions worldwide with her radiant smile.” It says she brought honor to Virginia, and continues to inspire other young women to work hard to achieve their goals. AP
