Corey Harris, the man who went viral for driving during a virtual court hearing for his suspended license case, never had a license to begin with.
Last month, a video of Harris’ virtual court hearing before Ann Arbor, Michigan judge Cedric Simpson went viral as the defendant appeared on Zoom from behind the wheel.
“Mr. Harris, are you driving?” Simpson asked.
“Actually, I’m pulling into my doctor’s office,” Harris responded. “So, just give me one second. I’m parking right now.”
The judge, baffled by Harris driving with a suspended license during his hearing, ultimately revoked his bond and ordered him to report to jail that day. He spent two days in prison.
Last week, the judge overseeing Harris’ case said the man never had a license to suspend in the first place.
According to Angela Benander of Michigan’s Secretary of State, Harris’ driving privileges were initially suspended in 2007 when he failed to pay child support. Harris never had a license, so his privileges to get one were suspended, according to his lawyer Dionne Webster-Cox.
Webster-Cox said her client believed he had a license because it was suspended.
On Friday (June 7), Harris made “a step in the right direction” by getting his learner’s permit, his lawyer said per PEOPLE.
A video shared on social media shows Harris dancing outside Michigan’s Secretary of State’s office after he earned his permit.
“Congratulations! You did it!” a woman is heard saying in the video.
Harris has a chance to earn his driver’s license for the first time on July 7 upon completion of a road test.
