Veterans Day: Stars Who Served in the Military

Today is Veteran’s Day, a time when the nation pauses in gratitude and to pay homage to the millions of current and former servicemen and women who put their lives on the line for their country.

Even many pop culture experts may not know the number of celebrities who may have picked up a rifle and went into battle in defense of U.S. sovereignty.

Take a look at some of the celebs and dignitaries who served in the United States military:

1. Ice Cube (above): The “New Jack City” and “Law & Order” star served in the Army from 1979-83 before becoming a heavy metal rap icon.

Malcolm Forbes: The founder of the world-renowned Forbes magazine and business tycoon earned a Bronze Medal and a Purple Heart while being injured during battle in World War II.

Nate Dogg: The late, great hip hop crooner was a munitions specialist in the Marine Corps. before coming back to Long Beach, Calif., and hooking up with Snoop Dogg and Warren G and helping to change the face of rap and pop music.

Clint Eastwood: Served in the military during the Korean War.

Jimi Hendrix: Served in the 101st Airborn Division

Drew Carey: Served in the Marine Corps.

George Steinbrenner: Before becoming “The Boss” of the New York Yankees dynasty, he was a 2nd Lt. in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Columbus, Ohio.

Harry Belefonte: Served in the Army during World War II.

David Robinson: He got the nickname “The Admiral” for serving in the U.S. Naval Academy before winning a title with the San Antonio Spurs of the NBA.

James Earl Jones: He was in the ROTC during the Korean war.

Montell Williams: Was accepted into the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.

Bill Cosby: Served in the Navy during the Korean War.

Al Gore: The former vice president served in the Army and fought in the Vietnam War.

MC Hammer: He served in the U.S. Navy before returning to Oakland, Calif., and birthing his superstardom.

Former President George H.W. Bush: Before he was director of Central Intelligence at the CIA and then vice president and president, the Yale University grad was a Navy pilot who flew 58 missions during World War II.

Mr T: Born Laurence Tureaud, Mr. T served in the U.S. Army.

Dave Thomas: The founder of the Wendy’s restaurant chain served in the military during the Korean War.
