The man suspected of fatally shooting three University of Virginia football players last year is facing new murder charges.
According to the Associated Press, suspected shooter Christopher Darnell Jones Jr., 23, was indicted on aggravated murder charges by a special grand jury in Charlottesville. Jones would serve a mandatory life sentence if convicted.
Jones, a former member of the UVA football team, was riding on a charter bus on its way back to campus from a field trip in November 2022 when he shot his fellow peers. Football players Lavel Davis Jr., D’Sean Perry, and Devin Chandler were killed in the shooting. A fourth member of the team, Mike Hollins, and another student were wounded.
According to Albemarle County Commonwealth’s Attorney James Hingeley, the upgraded murder charges were issued on Wednesday (September 6). Liz Murtagh, the public defender in Charlottesville and Albemarle County who is representing Jones, said she is “sorry the prosecutor chose to go this route.”
